April Is National Distracted Driving Month

Comments Off

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month and intends to draw attention to this epidemic.

Distracted driving is a dangerous epidemic on America’s roadways. In 2014, 3,179 people were killed in distracted driving crashes, according to Distraction.gov.

In the month of April, law enforcement agencies will be cracking down on distracted drivers. In Nevada, special emphasis will be put on enforcing Nevada’s distracted-driving laws.

New technology allows us to make phone calls, dictate texts or emails and update social media while driving – all actions that are proven to increase crash risk. Distracted driving can be many things from texting while driving to talking to passengers or eating and drinking; basically anything and everything that distracts and diverts the drivers’ attention while operating a vehicle.

Handling a mobile phone or other electronic device is against the law. Fines range from $50 for the first offense up to $250 and a six-month license suspension for subsequent offenses within a seven-year period, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation.

The best way to end distracted driving is by educating all Americans to the danger it poses. For more information please visit Distraction.gov to find out what you can do to help. Together, we can help save lives.
