Summer Infant has issued a voluntary recall of more than 800,000 rechargeable batteries used in baby monitors due to a burn hazard.

To this date, the company has received 22 reports of overheated and ruptured batteries which included incidents of smoke and minor property damage. The CPSC News Release includes a detailed list of recalled devices and corresponding battery numbers.

The recalled video monitors are hand-held devices and sold with a matching camera and A/C adaptor at Babies “R” Us stores as well as other retailers from February 2010 through 2012.

Consumers are urged to open the back compartment of the monitor unit to check the battery’s markings. For easy to follow directions on how to properly check the battery, Summer Infant has a short YouTube video.

If you have a battery affected by the recall please remove it and complete the online form to receive a free replacement battery. Please note: the monitor can be used on AC power with power cord while awaiting the replacement battery.

Baby Monitor Safety Tips

When the monitor is not in use, unplug the cord.

Make sure the unit is properly ventilated.

The device should not be used near any type of water.

If the device or adapter becomes too warm, immediately discontinue use. Additionally if the battery appears to be bulging or swollen, also discontinue use as this can be a sign of overheating.
