FDA Warns About Jerky Pet Treats

Comments Off

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall of jerky pet treats after they have been linked to a mysterious outbreak that has led to hundreds of sick cats and dogs and more than 500 deaths.

The pet treats, made in China, come in different assortments including chicken, duck and dried fruit. The major problem is that China and that of its manufacturers of pet foods are not bound by U.S. law to list the country of origin for each product.

Veterinarians and pet owners, worldwide, are urged to contact the agency if their pets have been displaying symptoms of being sick. They should also contact the FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinator within their state.

Symptoms include decreased activity, appetite, vomiting, diarrhea as well as an increase in water intake and urination within hours of ingesting the tainted treats. If your dog if dog has become ill or you are unsure, contact your veterinarian immediately.

More than 1,100 jerky pet treat samples have been tested since 2011 across the country. The agency is also cooperating with regulators and scientists in China to find the cause. In the meantime, not feeding these types of treats to your pets might be the safest option.
