There are recalls on prescription and over-the-counter drugs quite often and it can be scary but it can definitely be less worrisome if you know what to do. Below are some simple steps you can take to ensure your health and safety.

  • First and foremost stay calm.
  • If the recall involves a prescription drug you should contact your doctor as soon as possible. In most cases, it is unsafe to abruptly stop taking any medication you’ve been taking for extended periods of time.
  • If it is an OTC drug you can still call your doctor. Alternatively, you can contact the pharmacist at your local pharmacy for more information. They have recall information and can advise you on what to do. It may be as simple as exchanging your medication. Calling the pharmacy is in fact often times better than talking to the receptionist at your doctor’s office as they usually have pertinent information regarding all medications, recalls and precautions.
  • Recall information is posted regularly to the FDA Web site. You can learn more about each drug recall, what to look for, what lots are included and also find all instructions involved along with the recall.
  • Lastly, if you are experiencing any symptoms related to a recall and you are unable to reach your doctor, you should go to the emergency room for good measure.
