In the latest setback to hit the cruise industry, dozens of passengers aboard a four-night cruise aboard a Royal Caribbean ship became sick with a stomach illness.
A total of 2,500 passengers were aboard the Majesty of the Seas, of which sixty-six passengers suffered gastrointestinal issues that included diarrhea and vomiting, according to Royal Caribbean International. Two of more than 800 crew members also became ill.
The cause is suspected to be norovirus, according to a statement released by the company. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), describes Norovirus as a very contagious bug that can spread by infected persons, in contaminated food or water and through contaminated surfaces. An estimated 20 million people in the U.S. are affected by the virus each year which results in 570 to 800 deaths.
The company statement also said, “Passengers affected by the illness responded well to over-the-counter medication. It further stated it enhanced cleaning aboard the ship during the cruise to prevent the illness from spreading.”
Last May, a fire broke out on the Royal Caribbean’s Grandeur of the Seas cruise ship which forced passengers to fly home. And, in February, a fire left the Carnival Triumph adrift in the Gulf of Mexico.
