The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) has been investigating more than 100 crashes since early Wednesday, up to today, according to a news release.

A total of 30 accidents involved injuries, while the rest were primarily property damage. Additionally, fifty-four calls were received for slide-offs, spinouts or drivers that required assistance in the snow. The majority of calls were placed Wednesday evening into early Thursday.

The NHP issued a safety statement regarding the above accidents and sent it via email, it’s quoted below:

“As a safety reminder to all motorists when driving conditions are more challenging due to wet, icy, or snow covered roadways; please increase your following distance with other vehicles, reduce the speed of your vehicle to minimize an unplanned event, and plan on allowing more time to get to your destination. Speed too fast for conditions is the most common denominator in the calls for service related to crashes and spin outs when roads are slick. Please expect your commute to take longer and drive extra cautiously when these conditions are present.”

To that end, to help prevent these accidents from happening you can and should adhere to the following safety measures.

Make sure you can see – Check your wiper blades and ensure the windshield is clean. Also check that the heater and defroster are properly functioning.

Check the battery – Make sure it is corrosion free and add water if needed. If your battery is older than three years, have it tested at an auto body shop. In fact, having all the hoses and fluids checked is a good idea.

Check tire pressure –Traction is often jeopardized in icy, wet and snowy conditions, as such properly inflated tires are important.

Lastly and most importantly, have an emergency kit in the vehicle at all times that contains – tire changes, flashlight, blanket, snow scraper, first aid kit, jumper cables, windshield wipers and more.
