Man Sues Summerlin Hospital Over TB-related Deaths

Comments Off

A wrongful death suit has been filed against Summerlin Hospital along with several named doctors and nurses, by a Las Vegas man, who contends failure to diagnose and treat his wife for tuberculosis despite symptoms during her pregnancy, led to her death.

Ruben White, 30, hopes to achieve a “sense of justice and accountability” with his lawsuit against Summerlin Hosptial.

The suit, filed in Clark County District Court alleges malpractice is to blame in the tuberculosis-related deaths of White’s wife and twin daughters in 2013. The suit further claims nursing staff failed to follow required protocols for infectious disease screening, including tuberculosis, even though Vanessa White was exhibiting several symptoms consistent with a tuberculosis diagnosis. Vanessa’s twins were born prematurely “in substantial part due to the failure of the hospital and staff to identify and treat their mother’s tuberculosis,” the complaint further claims.

World-class experts reviewed case records and came to determine that the hospital and nurses and doctors that were involved in Vanessa White’s care failed to meet accepted standards of medical care.

The Nevada Occupational Safety and Health Administration, in April, fined the hospital a total of $39,600 for violations regarding last year’s TB outbreak. At least 20 hospital employees were exposed to and contracted tuberculosis, according to OSHA.
