Scallops have been voluntarily recalled by Sea Port Products after an estimated 206 people were sickened with hepatitis A.
The cases were report on August 17 and resulted in a prompt investigation by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). All reported cases to dated involved adults. Of those with hepatitis A, 51 were hospitalized.
Hepatitis A is a liver disease that can cause dark jaundice, fatigue and severe stomach pain. In cases with a compromised immune system, it can cause liver failure and death. Hepatitis A is commonly contracting after eating food that has been contaminated with fecal matter from a person who has the infection. Symptoms can be present anywhere from 15 to 50 days after contact with an infected person.
The recalled scallops were distributed in California, Nevada and Hawaii.
