The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an extensive recall of products containing the spice Cumin because it may be contaminated with peanut, which poses a serious threat to people that have a peanut allergy.
The recall effects hundreds of packages of products. Allergy related recalls of this size are rare. However, the leading cause of food recalls is undeclared allergens which can trigger a deadly allergic reaction in some.
To date, the agency has received seven consumer reports related to peanut-tainted cumin. The recalled items include but are not limited to items such as black beans, marinated meats, spice mixes and more.
Over the past two months there have been several recalls which started in December when Adams Foods of Texas recalled several cumin spices. In February Whole Foods issued a recall that affected 100 products and on February 13 Goya Foods recalled some products as well.
About 15 million Americans have food allergies and eight foods — peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat, soy, fish and shellfish — account for more than 90 percent of the allergies, according to the Food Allergy Research and Education group.
Several more cumin recalls are surfacing, monitor the FDA Website for updates.
